Boys Basketball History 

Crusaders finish season 22-5 after District Semifinal Loss.

The game lived up to all the hype and expectation for a District Tournament Semifinal game where the winner earns a berth into the Regional Quarterfinals.  Unfortunately, the Crusaders found themselves unable to overcome Faith Christian’s home-court advantage and early lead to keep the season going following a 67-56 defeat.

 

The Crusaders were led by Erik McRae with 18 points, David White with 16 points, and Faysal Shafaat who scored 11 points with 15 rebounds.

All District Awards

Congratulations to senior David White and junior Faysal Shafaat for being selected to the First Team All District 7-1A, and senior Erik McRae for being selected to the Third Team.

Crusaders finish regular season 21-4
The OLA Varsity Boys Basketball finished the regular season with a pair of victories to conclude the regular season with a 21-4 record.

On Monday February 2, the Crusaders secured win #20 with a 63-34 victory over International Community School.  Joseph Huerta had a game-high 13 points, and Faysal Shafaat and Ron Jackson added 12 each.  Eight players scored at least 4 points in the game. 

Thursday February 5 was Senior Night for Joseph Huerta, Erik McRae and David White.  The trio of senior guards capped their regular season with a 70-56 victory over Southland Christian in front of a great crowd.  Faysal Shafaat had a game-high 21 points with 16 rebounds.  McRae and White each added 15 points and 5 assists.

The Crusaders open the District 7-1A Tournament as the #2 seed against #7 Circle Christian at 4:00pm Tuesday February 10, 2009. 

 

All district tournament games are played at Faith Christian – 2008 N. Goldenrod Rd., Orlando 32807.  Admission is $5. 

 

Please arrive early because seats will be limited for games and sessions.

                           

Crusaders defeat Colonial and Agape Christian; clinch #2 seed for District Tournament
January 27, 2009

The OLA Varsity Boys Basketball team clinched the #2 seed heading into the 1A-7 District Tournament following a win against Agape Christian 64-58 Tuesday night. 

The Crusaders (19-4, 4-2) led 37-27 at the half before Agape tied the game at 43 late in the third quarter.  Answering the comeback, OLA closed the quarter with a 4 point lead before closing out the game with some good defensive stops and timely free throw shooting. 

Faysal Shafaat scored a game-high 28 points with 19 rebounds.  Erik McRae added 14 points with 6 assists, and Adam Czaplewski scored 11 points with 7 rebounds and 3 assists.

On Monday night... OLA defeated Colonial 74-69.  David White scored 16 of his game-high 23 points in the second half with 4 assists.  Faysal Shafaat added 20 points and 12 rebounds, and Erik McRae contributed 16 points.

The 2009 1A-7 District Tournament will be held at Faith Christian Academy the week of February 9th.  No. 1 ranked in Class 1A Orlando Christian Prep is the #1 seed and defending district champion.

 

Crusaders rebound from tough loss with big victory
BOYS BASKETBALL - Jan 23, 2009

Orlando --  Orlando Lutheran needed some home cooking following a district loss on the road at Foundation Academy on Thursday.  A 27-6 first quarter against (Titusville) Temple Christian served as the opening dish to 60-14 victory.

The Crusaders (17-4) held Temple Christian to one field goal in each of the next three quarters.  Adam Czaplewski had a game-high 12 points with 3 blocks.  David White and Faysal Shafaat contributed 11 and 10 points, respecitvely.

NEXT UP: Monday Jan. 26 against Colonial at 7:30pm (Home), and Tuesday Jan. 27 against Agape Christian at 7:30pm (Home).

OLA 64, Dunnellon 59

Orlando Lutheran won their 10th consecutive game and the 2008 Buffalo Christmas Classic with a 64-59 victory over Dunnellon, the defending tournament champion.

OLA (11-2) trailed 21-13 at the end of the first quarter, but the Crusaders cut the defecit to 6 at the half and Tournament MVP Faysal Shafaat converted inside, and at the free-throw line, in the 3rd quarter with 13 points (5 FGs, 3-3 FTs).  He finished with his 3rd double-double in the tournament 18 points and 12 rebounds.

Shafaat's third quarter performance was matched by two 3-pointers by David White, who had 12 of his 17 points in the 4th, and one by Joseph Huerta. The teams traded leads before Lutheran pulled out the victory at the free-throw line courtesy of clutch shots by Cartree Pettis and Erik McRae.

The Crusaders will prepare for more district and conference opponents on January 6 as they host 1A No. 1 ranked Orlando Christian Prep.

Faysal Shafaat recorded his second double-double in the semifinal game of the Buffalo Christmas Classic against the host school as Orlando Lutheran advanced to the championship game with a 62-45 win over The Villages.

Shafaat scored a game-high 22 points with 23 rebounds for the Crusaders (10-2).  David White scored 17 points and Joseph Huerta added 11.  Erik McRae had 7 assists.

Faysal Shafaat scored 11 points and grabbed 17 rebounds, and Erik McRae had a game-high 13 points as Orlando Lutheran won their opening round game of the Buffalo Christmas Classic at The Villages High School 52-43 over Seven Rivers Christian.

The Crusaders (9-2) shot 14-17 from the free-throw line in the second half.  David White also added 11 points in the victory.

David White hit a 14-foot jump shoot with 41.7 seconds remaining as Orlando Lutheran held off Cirle Christian in their final two possessions to win the 2008 Kayln High Invitational.

Erik McRae had a game-high 17 points, 3 steals, and forced 5 turnovers to steady the Crusaders (8-2) through a tough scoring 3rd and 4th quarter where OLA scored 4 and 7 points, respectively, and surrendered the lead for the first time early in the fourth quarter.  Zach Tahner led Circle with 11 points.

Four Crusaders scored in double-figures as Orlando Lutheran won their semifinal game of the Kayln High Invitational against host Master's Academy.

Faysal Shafaat led a fourth quarter charge as Orlando Lutheran (7-2) separated themselves from the Eagles with a 26-11 quarter.  Shafaat scored 9 of his 20 points with 10 rebounds and 5 steals in the quarter. Erik McRae and David White scored 19 each, and Adam Czaplewski scored 13.

Master's Academy was led by Caz Thompson with 25 points, and Edwin Serrano with 16.

OLA 66, The Villages 62

Orlando Lutheran watched an 11-point lead in the 3rd quarter disappear on a 14-1 run by the Villages to end the quarter before 3-pointers by Cartree Pettis, David White and Joseph Huerta gave the Crusaders a lead they would carry to the final horn.

Long distance shooting kept both teams in the game.  OLA (6-2) hit 8 3-pointers in the game, four by Huerta, who finished with 14 points and 6 steals, and the Villages (2-7) hit 9 3-pointers.  But, the all around performances by White, who had a game-high 15 points, 7 assists, 7 rebounds and 4 steals, and Erik McRae, who scored 11 points with 6 assists and 4 rebounds, were the consistent factors needed to hold onto the victory.

Faysal Shafaat added 8 points with 9 rebounds.  Colin Potter and Lance Roberts led the Villages with 13 points each.

The pressure of Orlando Lutheran's press wore down Geneva School in the 3rd quarter as OLA outscored Geneva 27-4 in the period en route to a 73-39 victory.

Joseph Huerta hit a season high 5 3-pointers, including 3 in the first quarter, scoring a game-high 21 points.  David White scored 17 points, 14 coming in the 3rd quarter, and Erik McRae added 14 points and 8 assists to help the Crusaders improve to 5-2.  Geneva was led by Louis Perez who scored 15 points.

Orlando Lutheran opened District play on the road with a victory against CFCA 70-67.  The first victory was the boys basketball program's first against CFCA in recent memory.

Layups and forced turnovers in the 2nd and 3rd quarters, helped the Crusaders (4-2) outscore CFCA 36-19 in the middle frames of the contest. The Eagles rallied back in the 4th quarter with an opportunity to tie the game on their final possession of the game with less than 10 seconds remaining.

Erik McRae led the Crusaders with 15 points and 6 assists.  Ron Jackson and David White contributed 14 and 12 points, respectively, off the bench.  Faysal Shafaat recorded a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds.  The Eagles were led by AJ Williams who scored a game-high 23 points.

Leading by 23 at halftime, Orlando Lutheran fought off a fourth quarter charge to defeat Southland Christian 69-61. 

The Crusaders (3-2) hot start in the first quarter, where they outscored the Flames 22-5, was tempered by a cold shooting final frame that saw them make only one field goal in the last period while going 5-14 at the free-throw line.  Southland outscored OLA 20-8 in the fourth period.

David White scored 18 with 6 assists, Erik McRae scored 15 points including 3-4 from behind the 3-point arc, Joseph Huerta added 14 points, while Adam Czaplewski contributed 12 points.

Trailing the entire game and facing a 10-point defecit at the end of the 3rd quarter, Orlando Lutheran made a furious comeback in the fourth quarter to send their first Mid-Florida Christian Conference game of the season into overtime before losing on a free-throw by Coventant Christian's Josh Lindsey with :03 seconds left.

The Crusaders (1-2) comeback in the fourth quarter was led by David White, who scored 17 of his 21 points in the fourth quarter and overtime, Faysal Shafaat, who scored 11 points and grabbed 14 rebounds, and Erik McRae, who scored 11 points.

Orlando Lutheran opened the first quarter with a 21-7 lead and finished the game by holding Academy at The Lakes to 2 points in the fourth quarter as they won the Consolation Game of the St. John Lutheran Turkey Tip-Off Classic 74-29.

OLA (1-1) was led by Faysal Shafaat who scored 18 points.  Adam Czaplewski and David White contributed 12 and 11 points, respectively.  Academy (0-2) was led by Matt Grossenbach with 10 points.

Orlando Lutheran opened the 2008-2009 season with a loss against preseason ranked 1A No. 7 St. Francis in the St. John Lutheran Turkey Tip-Off Classic 70-47. 

Seniors David White and Erik McRae led the Crusaders (0-1) with 17 and 13 points, respectively.  St. Francis (1-0) was led by 22 points from Joe Adell.
